Diphenhydramine is like benadryl for dogs. It is an antihistamine which is a cough suppressant, and antiemetic. Also it’s a sedative which is used for treating itching caused by insect bites or allergies.

Recommendation

It is used for treating itching caused by insect bites or stings or any other causes of allergy. It is also used for treating travel anxiety, coughing, nausea and reverse-sneeze.

Ingredients

Diphenhydramine HCl is the main ingredient of this product.

Directions

The dosage depends on the weight of dog or cat.
For dogs 0.5 to 2 mg per pound (1 to 4 mg/kg). It is given orally and two-three times daily.
For cats: 0.25 to 0.5 mg per pound (0.5 to 1 mg/kg)

Side Effects/Precautions

Though it’s a very safe product but it can cause vomiting, diarrhea, urinary retention, lethargy, lack of appetite or dry mouth. The sedative effects may be decreasing with time.
